Abstract: Edge effect is an important phenomenon commonly present in ecosystems and other systems This paper deals with the mechanism of its formation, such as the utilization of niche, the synergism in heterogeneous environment and the “surface-towards effect" in ecosystem succession etc.. various examples of edge effect are presented to show its potential use in economic ecology and some recommendations are put forward.
