Relationships Between Simulated Acid Rain, Soil Acidification and Root Growth of Chinese Fir and Schima superba

Abstract: (1) Simulated acid rain accelerates the leaching of Ca2+,Mg2+ cations in pot soils and leads to soil acidif ication.The more intense the soil acidity is,the more aluminum will be percolated. (2) When the pHof soil and acid rain is equal to or larger than 3.0, no significant influence can be observed on the root biomass and root growth of one-year-old Chinese fir and S.superba, whereas a pH2.0 acid rain can significantly prohibite the root growth of Chinese fir, especially for fine roots. At the same time, S.superba is less obviously affected. (3) When the content of soil active aluminum reaches to 30.2mg?100g soil)-1, and Al/Ca ratio to 4.9, the root growth of one-year-old Chinese fir is seriously inhibited.As for one-year-old S.superba, these parameters are 40.6mg?100 g soil)-1 and 15.8 respectively. (4) S.superba possesses higher resistence to acid rain and soil acidification than Chinese fir.
