Abstract: The biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) released by flower plants have effects on atmosphere quality, global climate change and human health. Here, we reviewed the progress on the basic concept and function of BVOCs, the types and emission rates of VOCs  emitted from common flower plants, components and effects of VOCs, and the internal factors such as developmental stage and organs and the external factors such as temperature, photoperiod and water condition that driving variation of VOCs emission. In addition, due to few studies on the negative effects and longterm measurement of VOCs emitted from flower plants, such research is needed in the future. More attention should be paid on the components and rate of VOCs emitted from flower plants under multiple environmental factors, and longterm and dynamic processes of VOCs emission. The negative impacts of VOCs emitted from flower plants on the environment quality and human health are also warranted.
