Abstract: This paper discusses the relationships among microorganisms, microbial biomass and nutrient transformation in terrestrial soils. The examples given for carbon-, nitrogen-and phosphorus flow through ecosystems emphatically indicat the significance of living organisms and microbial biomass as well as its importance in various transformations involved.
