Abstract: Characters of waters in Suzhou and its periphery are unsteady flow direction and little speific grandient. According to their social and economic functions streams are classified into four types, i.e., urban water source, self-purification, agricultural and landscaps streams. Regional environmental conditions reduce the self-purification capability of rivers. And hence, the regulation of water capacity and quality will be resolved mainly through combinational action of nature and mankind. Regulating the interelations between city and town, and city and countryside is urgcnt. It is necessary to draw up ecological policy adaptable to city economic reform.
