Abstract: The numbers, seasonal changes and physiological groups of heterotrophic and oligotrophic bacteria in waters and sediments of Honghu lake are investigated. Results show that the numbers of heterotrophic bacteria are 30000 organisms穖l-1 in waters and 660000 organisms穖l-1 in sediments, and decrease in order of:spring>autumn>summer>winter. In waters and sediments, aerobes are predominant; and in sediments, the numbers of oligotrophic bacteria are greatly larger than those of normal trophic bacteria. From the view point of microbiology, Honghu lake belongs to the oxygenated eutrophic lake.
