Abstract: Hippophae rhamnoides is widely distributed in the loess plateau. Its leaves and fruits are used for food by 45 species of birds and 5 species of mammals. In autumn, its ripe fruits can keep on the branches for months. And in winter, under food-lacking circumstances, the fruits can supply food for birds and mammals, especially for a rare bird Crossoptilon mantchuricum. Therefore, Hippophae rhamnoides plays an important role for the ecological balance in the Loess Plateau Region.
