Abstract: This paper presents the current status of saline water intrusion into the coastal zone of Laizhuo Gulf, Shandong province. The mechanism of saline water intrusion, its effects on terrestrial ecosystem, and its control strategy are diseussed. The results indicate that anthropogenic disturbance is the major factor causing the problem, and therefore, the first approach to control water intrusion is to focus on adjusting human activities, including management of regional water resources, rational control of industrial, agricultural and municipal water uses. The most efficient way is to practise water-efficient agriculture and eco-agriculture.
