An Ecological Study on the Holy Hill Tradition of the Bulang in the Mengyang Region of Xishuang banna Nature Reserve

Abstract: The Holy Hill tradition of the indigenous people,the Bulang,in the study area includes two aspects. (1)One is philosophical believes of the Bulang.They believe thathumanity is a subordinate element in the holistic nature consisting of inanimate,animate,humanity and gods.(2)Another is that the Bulang people practically build their villages athill tops,divide their lands into Holy Hill(a natural virgin forest near the village),burial area,shift fallow and natural forests;and utilize animals and plants in sustainable style.An analysis of the contribution of Holy Hill tradition to the harmony of humanity with nature,the protection of settlement environment,tropical rain forests and biodiversity was made.The Holy Hill tradition,playing still an important role in daily life of the Bulang people,is carried forward in the practice such as in management of forests for water resources,conservation of Holy Hills,establishment of new burial area and development of local ecological village.
