Abstract: The relationships between the plant surface and insects are briefly reviewed, These include: the effects of physical structure and chemical composition of the plant surface on phytophagous insects and interrelationships among the plant, phytophagous insect and natural enemy.Emphasis is laid on the effects of glossy plant phenotypes, trichomes and epicuticular lipids on feeding, oviposition and movement of insects. Finally, several considerations in future studies of insect-plant surface relationship are suggested.
