To deeply explore the climate signals contained in tree rings, we extracted red, green, and blue light intensities from the tree rings of Abies fargesii in the Jinhouling (altitude: 2564 m) and Taiziya (altitude: 2494 m) areas of Shennongjia, using the CooRecorder software. With an age-dependent spline, we fitted the growth trends, established chronologies, and analyzed the correlation between tree ring chronology and climate factors from 1953 to 2020. The results showed that the red, green, and blue light intensities of earlywood of trees from Jinhouling showed a significant positive correlation with mean maximum temperature, mean temperature, and mean minimum temperature in June. In Taiziya, the red, green, and blue intensities of earlywood was significantly positively correlated with the mean maximum temperature in June and significantly negatively correlated with March precipitation. In Jinhouling, latewood red, green, and blue light intensities showed significant positive correlation with mean maximum temperature of June, July and August, as well as with mean temperature and mean minimum temperature in July and August, and significant negative correlations with July precipitation. In Taiziya, latewood red, green and blue light intensities were significantly positively correlated with mean maximum temperature, mean temperature, and mean minimum temperature in August and negatively correlated with August precipitation. The responses of the red, green, and blue bands of tree rings to climate factors often showed a regular trend of variation with wavelength changes, but the trends varied across different bands.

Mixed-species plantations have emerged as an effective measure for maintaining forest productivity and ecological services over recent years. However, current research predominantly focuses on comparing productivity differences between two distinct periods, providing limited insights into the comprehensive mixing effects across the entire lifespan of trees. In this study, we employed dendrochronological methods to assess the productivity of the monoculture of Pinus massoniana and an even-aged mixture of P. massoniana and Castanopsis hystrix grown under similar environmental conditions and management regimes. Our objectives were to document stand dynamics and to compare the productivity and temporal stability of mixed plantation versus monoculture of P. massoniana. The results showed that, after 39 years of mixing, the productivity of P. massoniana, measured as basal area increment (BAI), in the mixed plantation was 36.8% lower than that in monoculture. Furthermore, the temporal stability of productivity of P. massoniana in the mixed plantation was lower than that in the mixed plantation across all age classes. The mixing effects of P. massoniana were negative except in drought years. Such effects varied in different age classes, suggesting that the strength of interspecific complementarity of P. massoniana and C. hystrix in the even-aged mixed plantation was lower than that of interspecific competition. Overall, our results emphasize the importance of considering functional traits and selecting appropriate mixing modes when establishing mixed-species forests. To achieve sustainable management of mixed forests, timely thinning or release cutting is recommended to mitigate the strong light competition among trees.

To understand the responses of radial growth of Fraxinus mandshurica from different provenances to climatic factors, we used the dendrochronological method to establish the standard chronologies of F. mandshurica from 20 provenances in Maoershan provenance test forest, and analyzed the differences in radial growth and their correlation with climate factors. The results showed that the overall trend of F. mandshurica chronologies from 20 provenances was generally similar. There were differences in growth amplitude, with the average radial growth of F. mandshurica from Dailing, Lushuihe and Sanchazi being the highest. The radial growth of F. mandshurica from 20 provenances was significantly positively correlated with the highest temperature in July and the average temperature in July except for Huinan. The radial growth of F. mandshurica from 14 provenances was significantly positively correlated with the precipitation in August. The radial growth of F. mandshurica was constrained by temperature and precipitation during the growing season. There was difference in radial growth among F. mandshurica from different provenances under drought stress. F. mandshurica from Wangqing, Dailing, and Hailin had stronger resistance to drought, while that from Wandianzi, Zhanhe, and Xinglong had better recovery ability after drought.

In recent years, a surge in drought occurrences has dramatically impacted tree growth worldwide. We examined the ecological resilience of Larix principis-rupprechtii plantations with varying densities (1950, 2355, and 2595 trees·hm-2) at the Saihanba Mechanical Forest Farm, by extracting the increment cores using the standard dendrochronological method to measure individual-tree basal area increments (BAI) as part of our assessment of ecological resilience, including resistance (Rt), recovery (Rc), and resilience (Rs). The results showed that drought events occurred in 2006-2010, 2015, and 2018. The Rt for L. principis-rupprechtii plantations varied from 0.76 to 2.01 across three drought events, indicating generally high resistance, except for the plantation with 2355 trees·hm-2 during the second dry year (Rt=0.69). The Rt for the plantation with 2595 trees·hm-2 significantly decreased across all drought events, while no significant change was observed in the plantations with 1950 and 2355 trees·hm-2. The Rc showed no differences in response to a single drought event across plantation densities, with a significant upward trend for all the densities with each occurrence of drought event. There was no significant difference in the resilience of different densities of L. principis-rupprechtii to the first drought event, whereas the plantation with 2595 trees·hm-2 exhibited significantly lower Rs during the second and third drought events compared with 1950 and 2355 trees·hm-2, respectively. During the 2015 drought event, plantation with 2595 trees·hm-2 experienced a significant growth decline (radial growth change rate was -26.5%), while no such decline was observed in the plantations with 1950 and 2355 trees·hm-2. Overall, the plantation with 2595 trees·hm-2 demonstrated the lowest resilience to drought events.

Chinese Journal of Applied Ecology    2024, 35 (5): 1177-1186.   DOI: 10.13287/j.1001-9332.202405.001
Abstract328)      PDF(pc) (4055KB)(51)       Save
The radial growth of trees in alpine timberline is particularly sensitive to climate change. We sampled and disposed tree-ring cores of three coniferous tree species including Juniperus saltuaria, Abies forrestii, and Larix potaninii at alpine timberline in Yading Nature Reserve. The standard tree-ring chronology was used to explore the response of radial growth of different timberline species to climate change. The results showed that radial growth of L. potaninii increased after 2000, while that of A. forrestii declined after 2002, and J. saltuaria showed a significant decreasing growth trend in the past 10 years. Such results indicated divergent growth responses to climate factors among the three tree species at alpine timberline. The radial growth of J. saltuaria was sensitive to temperature, and was positively correlated with the minimum temperature from previous October to current August, the mean tempera-ture from previous November to current April and from current July to October, but was negatively associated with the relative humidity from current July to October. The radial growth of A. forrestii showed negative correlation with mean temperature and the maximum temperature from May to June in the current year, while it exhibited positive association with the relative humidity and the Palmer drought severity index from May to June in the current year. L. potaninii radial growth was positively associated with mean temperature and the maximum temperature of November-December in the previous year, the maximum temperature of current March and mean temperature of current August. The temporal stability of climate-growth relationship varied among different timberline species. The positive correlation between radial growth of A. forrestii and J. saltuaria and temperature gradually decreased, while the posi-tive relationship of L. potaninii radial growth and temperature gradually increased. Under the background of climate warming, rapid rise in surface air temperatures may promote the radial growth of L. potaninii, while inhibit that of J. saltuaria and A. forrestii, which may change the position of regional timberline.

Populus euphratica is an important tree species in the arid regions of Northwest China, which is sensitive to climate changes. Climate of the Northwest China is changing to be “warm and humid”, but how it would affect the regional forest growth is not clear. In this study, the radial growth response of P. euphratica to major climatic factors and their temporal changes during 1984-2021 were analyzed by using dendrochronology method in the desert oasis ecotone of Cele in the southern Tarim basin. The results showed that tree-ring width index of P. euphratica had a significant negative correlation with temperature in September of the previous year, and in February and May of current year, had significant positive correlation with precipitation in September of previous year and March and May of current year, and had significant positive correlations with SPEI in February and May of current year. The relationships between tree-ring width index and combined month climatic factors were more obvious. The results of moving correlation analysis showed that the correlation between tree-ring width index and temperature in the growing season tended to be strengthened in recent years, while the correlation between tree-ring width index and precipitation, SPEI tended to be declined or remain stable. The variations of the relationships between tree-ring width index and combined month climatic factors were more obvious compared that with single month. Current regional climate is conducive to the growth and development, as well as the improvement of ecological shelter function of P. euphratica forest in the desert oasis ecotone of Cele.

Abstract948)      PDF(pc) (3275KB)(68)       Save
Picea schrenkiana is the dominant tree species in Ili River Basin located in the western Tianshan Mountains of Xinjiang. We investigated the growth decline characteristics of P. schrenkiana at different altitudes (1800, 2300 and 2800 m) based on tree-ring index (TRI) and percentage growth change (GC), aiming to understand the growth response of P. schrenkiana to drought events at different altitudes and the impacts of altitude on tree growth decline in this region. The results showed that P. schrenkiana experienced multiple decline events at low-altitude (1800 m). TRI and GC identified inconsistent occurrence time of the decline events. The variations of TRI indicated that P. schrenkiana at low-altitude experienced two large-scale declines during 1927-1933 and 2017-2014, respectively. The variations of GC identified four decline events, including 1891-1893, 1924-1926, 1973-1975, and 2004-2009. The radial growth of P. schrenkiana across altitudes from low to high was significantly affected by the Palmer drought severity index (PDSI) of the previous growing season. The impact of current PDSI on P. schrenkiana during the growing season initially enhanced but later decreased with increasing altitude. In the extreme drought year 1917, the magnitude of growth decline increased with altitude. At low-altitude (1800 m), the TRI was 0.65, which was 35% lower than the normal level. At mid-altitude (2300 m) and high-altitude (2800 m), it was 0.56 and 0.54, respectively, being 40% lower than the average level. The drought event in 1917 had a 2-year legacy effect on the growth of P. schrenkiana at all the altitudes, with the TRI in 1920 recovered to exceeding 0.9, being close to the normal level. The impact of altitude on drought-induced forest decline was significant. Tree growth in low-altitude areas was more vulnerable to drought events due to the relatively poorer water and temperature conditions at low-altitude, which could lead to multiple large-scale decline events. In mid- and high-altitude areas, where hydrothermal conditions were more favorable, trees could experience even more severe decline during extreme droughts.

Chinese Journal of Applied Ecology    2024, 35 (5): 1205-1213.   DOI: 10.13287/j.1001-9332.202405.002
Abstract266)      PDF(pc) (3033KB)(57)       Save
Global warming would significantly impact tree growth in the Tibetan Plateau. However, the specific effects of climate change on the radial growth of Pinus wallichiana in Mount Qomolangma are still uncertain. To investigate the responses of radial growth of P. wallichiana to climate change, we analyzed tree-ring samples in Mount Qomolangma. We removed the age-related growth trends and established three chronologies by using the modified negative exponential curve, basal area index, and regional curve standardization, and conducted Pearson correlation and moving correlation analyses to examine the association between radial growth of P. wallichiana and climatic factors. The results showed that this region had experienced a significant upward trend in temperature and that the Palmer drought severity index (PDSI) indicated a decreasing trend since 1980s, while the relative humi-dity changed from a significant upward to a downward trend around 2004, implying the climate shifted toward warmer and drier. Results of Pearson correlation analysis indicated a significant and positive relationship between the radial growth of P. wallichiana and the minimum temperature of April-June and July-September, and precipitation of January-April in the current year. The radial growth of P. wallichiana was significantly and negatively associated with the relative humidity of June, July, and August in the current year. As temperature rose after 1983, the relationship between radial growth of P. wallichiana and the minimum temperature in July and September of the current year increased from a non-significant association to a significant and positive association, while the relationship between radial growth of P. wallichiana and relative humidity in August and precipitation in September of the current year changed from non-significant correlation to a significant and negative correlation. Results of the moving correlation analysis suggested that the radial growth of P. wallichiana showed a significant and stable correlation with the July-September minimum temperature of the current year. Under the background of climate warming, the rapid increases of temperature would accelerate the radial growth of P. wallichiana in Mount Qomolangma.

Quantitative analysis of vessel characteristics at the cellular scale is of great significance for understan-ding plant adaptation strategies to environment. The direct grinding combined with stereo-microscope imaging is one of the main approaches to examine the anatomical structure of xylem (conifer tracheid and hardwood vessel) wood structure, which inevitably damages xylem cells, hindering the accurate understanding of anatomical structures. In this study, we applied X-ray micro-computed tomography (μCT) and stereo-microscope technology to quantitatively measure the diameter and area of vessels of seven Canadian broadleaved tree species (Acer saccharum, Betula papyrifera, Fraxinus americana, Ostrya virginiana, Populus grandidentata, Quercus rubra, and Carya cordiformis). We fitted the results by linear model and tested the feasibility of μCT technology in quantifying the vessel size of broadleaved species. We found that the results of the two methods for measuring vessel size were highly similar (R2=0.98). The goodness of fit of the vessel diameter results measured by the two methods for the ring-porous wood species (C. cordiformis, R2=0.98; F. americana, R2=0.96; Q. rubra, R2=0.99) was higher than that of the diffuse-porous wood species (B. papyrifera, R2=0.88; O. virginiana, R2=0.73; A. saccharum, R2=0.68; P. grandiden-tata, R2=0.88). The goodness of fit of small vessels (diameter≤200 μm, R2=0.94) measured by the two methods was higher than that of large vessels (diameter>200 μm, R2=0.92). Thus, the μCT technique provided a new non-destructive detection method for quantifying xylem vessels of broadleaved tree species.

The radial growth of trees plays a crucial role in determining forest carbon sequestration capacity. Understanding the growth dynamics of trees and their response to environmental factors is essential for predicting forest's carbon sink potential under future climate change. Coniferous forest trees are particularly sensitive to climate change, with growth dynamics responding rapidly to environmental shifts. We collected and analyzed data from 99 papers published between 1975 and 2023, and examined the effects of exogenous factors (such as temperature, water, and photoperiod) and endogenous factors (including tree age and species) on cambial activity and radial growth in conifers. We further explored the mechanisms underlying these effects. The results showed that climate warming had the potential to advance the onset while delayed the end of xylem differentiation stages in conifers in temperate and boreal regions. Water availability played a crucial role in regulating the timing of cambial phenology and wood formation by influencing water potential and cell turgor. Additionally, the photoperiod not only participated in regulating the start and end times of growth, but also influenced the timing of maximum growth rate occurrence. Future climate warming was expected to extend the growing season, leading to increase in growth of conifers in boreal regions and expanding forests to higher altitudes or latitudes. However, changes in precipitation patterns and increased evapotranspiration resulting from temperature increases might advance the end of growing season and reduce growth rate in arid areas. To gain a more comprehensive understanding of the relationship between radial growth and climatic factors, it is necessary to develop process-based models to elucidate the physiological mechanisms underlying wood formation and the response of trees to climatic factors.

Chinese Journal of Applied Ecology    2022, 33 (10): 2796-2804.   DOI: 10.13287/j.1001-9332.202210.006

Based on the tree-ring increment cores of Pinus tabuliformis collected from the eastern Yinshan Mountains, the tree-ring width chronology was developed. The correlation coefficients were calculated between the chronology and monthly mean temperature and monthly precipitation during the instrumental period of AD 1952-2007. The results showed that the highest correlation was found between the total precipitation from September of previous year to June of current year and the chronology (r=0.73, n=56, P<0.01). Based on the correlation, the September of previous year to June of current year total precipitation variation was reconstructed in the eastern Yin-shan Mountains during the past 399 years (AD 1619-2017). The reconstruction explained 54.9% of the variation in the total precipitation from September of previous year to June of current year for the calibration period (AD 1952-2007). Both the ‘leave-one-out' cross validation and split-period validation showed that the model was relatively robust, with sufficient skills of estimation and high reliability. At the decadal scale, there were four wet periods (AD 1619-1663, AD 1705-1711, AD 1945-1963, and AD 1979-2017)) and four dry periods (AD 1734-1767, AD 1786-1814, AD 1839-1867, and AD 1888-1942) in the past 399 years. Among those periods, the AD 1979-2017 was the wettest period, and AD 1888-1942 was the longest dry duration with the driest period at the late 1920s. Results of power spectral analysis revealed cyclic fluctuations of precipitation series on 2-7 years and 125 years. In addition, the comparison with other reconstructions and spatial correlation analysis indicated that the reconstructed precipitation series well represented regional scale precipitation variation.

Digital image processing techniques have been widely used to measure tree ring width, but most of which focus on conifer species with clear boundary. For hardwood species with complex anatomical structure and poor boundary of tree ring, traditional image processing techniques have poor performance. To improve the accuracy of tree-ring boundary recognition of broad-leaved tree species, we developed a tree-ring width measurement algorithm based on U-Net convolutional neural network model. An automatic tree-ring boundary recognition model based on U-Net convolutional neural network was constructed. Based on U-Net, we proposed a tree-ring boundary detection model for the tree cores of Picea jezoensis var. komarovii, Abies nephrolepis, Pinus koraiensi, Betula platyphylla, Betula costata, and Ulmus pumila. Three evaluation indices were used to compare the differences between U-Net method and manual labeling method, and the accuracy of tree ring width measured by WinDENDRO was compared. The results showed that tree ring boundary identified by U-Net accurately matches the actual boundary. Importantly, the detection accuracy of the tree ring boundary of broad-leaved trees was significantly improved compared with the traditional digital image processing method. The obtained tree ring width is proved to be accurate and reliable as evaluated by three evaluation indices, which has high practical value in tree ring analysis.

We established 340-year chronologies of total ring width, early wood width, and late wood width with tree-ring samples of Pinus taiwanensis at high altitude collected from the western Tianmu Mountain in northern Zhejiang Province. According to the criterion that subsample signal strength (SSS) should be larger than 0.8, the reliable period was from 1810 to 2019. Through the correlation analysis between chronologies and climatic factors, we examined the responses of tree ring growth to climate. The results showed that radial growth of P. taiwanensis was more sensitive to temperature than to precipitation. Comprehensively considering the correlation analysis results for the raw and first-order difference series, early wood width was significantly correlated with the early growing season mean and maximum temperatures of the prior year, while late wood width with prior May and current September mean and maximum temperatures. The correlation pattern of total ring width was similar to that of early wood width, although at a low level. The optimal correlation was between early wood width and prior April-July mean temperature. Based on this relationship, April-July mean temperature of the Tianmu Mountain, East China was reconstructed for the period of 1809-2018 with an explained variance of 61.5%. Both the raw and first-order difference series passed the split sample calibration-verification test. The warm periods were 1809-1833 and 1965-2018, with a cold period in 1834-1964. Temperature had risen rapidly since the 1960s. From the standpoint of low frequency, it reached an unprecedented level since the 1980s over the past 210 years. Spatial correlation analysis showed that the reconstructed temperature series could represent temperature variations of East China, which had a good agreement with a reconstructed regional temperature series from East China. Our results showed that P. taiwanensis had a great potential for paleoclimate reconstruction in East China.

Taking Pinus tabuliformis plantations at different slopes in Songshan Mountains, Henan Province, China as subjects, we established different residual chronologies of P. tabuliformis in Paomaling (PML) and Junjifeng (JJF) and whole region (RC). The results showed that the chro-nological quality of PML was higher than that of JJF. Chronologies of PML and JJF had more climate information, which had significant positive relationship with mean temperature in current February, mean temperature and mean maximum temperature at the end of growing season (September-October), and significant negative relationship with mean maximum temperature in current May. The response of radial growth of P. tabuliformis to climate differed in PML and JJF. Radial growth of P. tabuliformis in PML was positively correlated with mean minimum temperature in March and precipitation in September, while that in JJF was positively correlated with precipitation in May and mean minimum temperature in September. Residual chronologies of P. tabuliformis in whole region contained more climate information. The multiple regression analysis method was used to simulate that the main limiting factors of tree-ring width growth of P. tabuliformis, which was a range of temperature indicators, especially current mean temperature in September. The result was consistent with that of correlation analysis. This study could provide basic services for forest protection and ecological construction in Songshan Mountains region.

The study of regional historical climate change is limited by the availability of observational data, which is not conducive to understanding long-term climate change. In this study, we used the tree-ring cores of Pinus tabuliformis to establish a tree ring width chronology (RES) from the southeast Shanxi Province, and analyzed the relationship between precipitation and tree-ring width chronology. The results showed that the residual chronology had a good correlation (r=0.636, n=59, P<0.01) with January-June precipitation. A linear regression was used to reconstruct the January-June precipitation for the southeastern Shanxi Province, which accounts for 40.4% of the instrumental precipitation variation during 1724-2019. Dry conditions occurred during 1742-1771, 1830-1848, 1872-1894, 1917-1945, 1961-1981, and 1990-2019, while the periods of 1727-1741, 1772-1829, 1849-1871, 1895-1916 were relatively wet. There were 10 extremely dry years and six extremely wet years during the period from 1724 to 2019. The longest dry periods were 1742-1771 and 1990-2019, while the longest wet period was 1772-1829. Results of spatial climate correlation analyses with gridded land surface data showed that the precipitation reconstruction contained a strong regional precipitation signal for southeast Shanxi Province. Power spectrum analysis of the precipitation reconstruction showed remarkable 2.3, 3.2-3.3, 3.7-3.8, 6.3-6.7, 8.3-8.7 years cycles for the past 296 years, the 2.3 year cycle corresponds to the ‘quasi-two-year pulsation', and the 3.2-3.3, 3.7-3.8 and 6.3-6.7 year cycles might have a certain relationship with ENSO. Results of the spatial correlation analysis showed that the reconstructed precipitation series could better represent precipitation changes in the study area.

We constructed standard tree-ring-width chronology of Picea likiangensis var. rubescens for the Larima sampling site in the Ganzi Prefecture, Sichuan Province, by the single-free detren-ding method. The results showed that there was significant and positive correlation between the tree-ring chronology and March-August 1-month scale standardized precipitation and evapotranspiration index (SPEI1) of Yajiang region. The variation of the March-August SPEI1 sequence for 1942-2008 was reconstructed based on the current and last year sequences of the tree-ring chronology, with an explained variation of 42.8%. The newly reconstructed series mainly represented the variation of SPEI1 in the low-frequency domain over the historical period. Three wet periods were found in 1442-1465, 1516-1601 and 1836-2008, while the two intervals were dry periods for the March-August SPEI1 reconstruction in the Yajiang region of West Sichuan Plateau. There was a significant drying trend in 1456-1762 for the reconstructed sequence, a significant wetting trend in 1455-1762, while the wetting trend was the most significant in 1959-2008. Mutation test showed that the sudden changes from dry to wet for the March-August SPEI1 reconstructions occurred in 1512, 1733, 1767, 1831, 1941, 1957 and 1975, while that in 1684 and 1961 was the opposite. The comparison with surrounding region showed a good coherence of variations in the low-frequency domain among the SPEI1 reconstruction for the Yajiang region, the annual precipitation reconstruction for the northeastern Tibetan Plateau, and the SPEI05 reconstruction for the northern slope of the eastern Qilian Mountains. The reconstructed sequence well represented the variation of the March-August SPEI1 in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau and the southern Qinhai Province.

Dendroclimatology is one of the important methods for studying climate changes in the past. Previous studies showed that tree-ring density is an important proxy for temperature in the growing season. In this study, we established 132-135 years chronologies of tree-ring maximum density, the minimum density, the latewood and the earlywood average density of Picea crassifolia at the western Qilian Mountains. We compared the climatic signal and its seasonal best combination of different tree-ring density chronologies, and evaluated their potential values as climate proxies. The responses of tree-ring latewood average density and the earlywood average density to climate signals during the growing season were much lower than that of tree-ring maximum and the minimum den-sity. The tree-ring earlywood average density and the minimum density had a strong relationship with the Palmer drought index, indicating that the earlywood average density and the minimum tree-ring density had the potential as substitute indicators for drought.

Evaluating the impacts of human activity on river runoff has important implications for regional water resource management. Here, we used seven tree-ring width chronologies to establish a regional mean tree-ring width chronology from the northern mountain of Delingha, Qaidam Basin. We conducted the correlation, moving correlation and regression analysis of regional mean tree-ring width chronology with runoff data from Bayin River gauge station. Then, we stimulated the June runoff of Bayin River from 1956 to 2002. The results showed that the highest correlation coefficient was found for June runoff (r=0.63, P<0.01), and their moving correlation coefficient decreased after 1986. Based on the stable relationship between tree-ring width chronology and the June runoff during 1956-1986, we built the reconstruction function, which was explained 50.8% of observed runoff. The stimulated runoff during 1987 to 2002 was significantly higher than the observed runoff (3.01 m3·s-1, P<0.001). These results indicated that human activity from the upper river had significant impacts on Bayin River runoff. Human activity should be considered as an important factor to protect security of sustainable water resource utilization for future water resource development and utilization in Bayin River region.

Due to the short-term observation record of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), the research on long-term NDVI changes is scarce, which limits our understanding of the impacts of NDVI changes in the context of global warming. In this study, a regional tree-ring chronology was developed based on the tree-ring samples of Pinus tabuliformis in the middle Qinling Mountains. The results showed that tree-ring width of P. tabuliformis was significantly positively correlated with May-July NDVI (r=0.624, P<0.01, n=34). The Sig-Free tree-ring width chronology was used to reconstruct May-July NDVI during the period 1825—2018, which explained 38.9% of the total NDVI variance. Results of spatial analysis showed that the reconstructed series could better represent the NDVI changes in the study area. There were six high NDVI periods and five low NDVI periods in the past 194 years. The vegetation grew best in 2006-2018, indicating vegetation cove-rage in the middle of Qinling Mountains had been improved during the warming hiatus. Low NDVI periods in the reconstruction series were consistent with drought over much of study area. Results of wavelet analysis indicated the existence of 2-4 years and 12-16 years cycles in the reconstruction series. SEA analysis showed that the reconstruction series decreased significantly in the El Nino year, while increased significantly in the first to third years after the La Nina event. The growth of P. tabuliformis was predicted to increase slightly under the SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0 and SSP5-8.5 scenarios.

The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) is widely used in various fields of vegetation research. Due to the short observation time, however, it is difficult to meet the research needs at long time scale. Here, we established a tree-ring width chronology (STD) based on Picea schrenkiana in Bayinbuluke, and calculated the correlation coefficient of chronology and NDVI with meteorological data. The results showed that both tree-ring width index and NDVI were significantly correlated with meteorological data. Combined with the significant positive correlation between width chronology and NDVI in June-August (r=0.7, P<0.01, n=38), summer NDVI (from June to August) was reconstructed over the past 339 years using a regression model. During 1680-2018, the reconstruction series had four dense vegetation periods (1738-1765, 1786-1798, 1964-1973 and 2000-2018) and five sparse vegetation periods (1690-1714, 1825-1834, 1850-1880, 1895-1920 and 1945-1955). The reconstruction reflected the hydrological signals in the central Tianshan Mountains. The comparison with the surrounding reconstructions revealed that when the runoff of Kaidu River increased and the local environment was humid, the vegetation coverage was high; otherwise the vegetation coverage was low. The extreme value of the reconstruction series also captured a series of natural disasters recorded in historical documents. Results of HYSPLT (Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory Model) backward trajectory model and wind field analysis showed that NDVI anomalies were affected by the precipitation from Westerlies.
