Abstract: Radial growth pattern of stem is used to reconstruct the history of suppression and releaseperiods in the course of Fagus engleriana growth, and the radial growth rate of 0.70mm.yr-1 is chosen as a threshold for distinguishing these two periods. About 69% of ring cores show a distinct suppression period. Its frequency is 1.6, and its mean duration is 22.6 years. The frequency and mean duration of release period are respectively 1.4 and 11.6 years. Three kinds of radial growth patterns are recognized.
